When salt loses its flavor, it is good for nothing but to be trampled underfoot by men.
In a recent blog, I talked about the fact that we, as the church, were not being persecuted but trampled underfoot by men (read the blog here). We are definitely seeing the effects of losing our flavor, but how do we get that flavor back and change the trampling underfoot that we are now experiencing? The answer is to be the head and not the tail.
“The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.” — Deuteronomy 28:13 (NIV).
What does this mean for us?
In His sermon on the mount, Jesus said that those who follow Him “are like salt among the people.” He also compared His followers to a light that cannot be hidden:
“Your lives light up the world. Let others see your light from a distance, for how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop? And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place? Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. So don’t hide your light!” — Matthew 5:14-16 (TPT).
Jesus talks here about placing the light He has given us on a hilltop, or in a high place, so everyone can benefit from it. There is no greater benefit we can bring than to become “the head” by bringing light to the systems currently governing people in our world.
I have talked in previous blogs (read these blog posts here) about the spheres of influence, and how those seven spheres affect and govern society. I have talked of how we, the church, as a whole, have vacated these spheres, separated from them, believing that they were evil. But in doing so, we have become salt without flavor. We have hidden our light.
Well, it is time to let our light shine again!
It is time to move up in our area of influence. God said he would make us the head. Why would he have said that if He did not want us in high places of influence? It is His will that we stand tall upon the hilltops, and influence our world.
Of course, to bring creative solutions, and to navigate each sphere’s unique challenges, we need wisdom. In fact, in some rabbinical literature, salt is often equated with wisdom.
It is my prayer that we receive God’s wisdom. Only then can we keep our flavor, stand tall upon the hilltops, and light up the world for His glory!
