So far, in this Dawn Of Purpose Blog series, we have looked at the idea that there are spheres of influence in society—and how God has a plan for each of them. In the last post, we explored the sphere of education, and how the lifelong pursuit of wisdom and understanding benefits society. In this post, we will explore the seventh, and final, sphere of influence. I hope that you will be able to step deeper into the place, and the purpose, that God created you to fill.

If you have read the book, Dawn Of Purpose, then you will know that the next place Nora entered was a large white city. This city is a place of power, and all the pride and corruption that tempts those who govern. But, after Nora meets a soldier named Rajesh, the two of them stumble upon a deeper, incorruptible power that all but a few have forgotten.

This reminds me of the sphere of government.

This sphere encompasses any form of elected office, and anyone who serves elected officials at any level. It can also include judges and lawyers involved with social issues, such as city or state prosecutors. Also the military, and first responders like police officers and firefighters.

What is God’s purpose for government?

God’s purpose for government is to provide peace, protection, and freedom for society as a whole. This requires some system of law and order to maintain this peace, protection, and freedom. It also requires leaders who will run these systems with righteousness and integrity.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.” — Proverbs 29:2 (NKJV).

A great government will always be run with transparency and accountability. And also, a great government needs to understand the identity and purpose of the people and the culture it is governing. Just as we, as individuals, have a unique identity and purpose, the same is true for nations. God gives each nation its own redemptive identity and purpose. So too, every state, every city, every region. Part of the responsibility of government is to know what God is calling a nation to be. And to create, or reshape, its ideals and policies to fulfill that purpose.

Just like a good business creates a vision statement, and a mission statement, along with core values that the company runs itself on, so too does a government need to base its mode of operation around the core values and vision of its God-given identity and purpose.

Individual states and cities will also have redemptive identity. When government officials are cognizant of that identity, they can then make decisions that are in line with those values and that vision. True leaders in the area of government are able to make decisions, and create policy, that balances the needs and liberties of the people, and that of the redemptive purpose of the region they are working for.

What does it mean to be a leader in this sphere?

The greatest leaders are those who have learned how to lay their own needs and lives down, in the service of a cause greater than themselves. No better place are these leaders needed, than in the sphere of government.

The requirements of character for a great leader in this area would be: courage, righteousness, servanthood, and humility. These leaders will put their own needs aside, to serve a cause greater than themselves, with the highest degree of wisdom and humility.

“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne.” — Psalm 89:14 (NKJV).

The perfect example of a leader is, of course, God himself. He is kind and gracious and mighty and powerful. The foundation of his throne is righteousness and justice. He is a king worthy of leading every nation, and worthy of being followed with the deepest trust and loyalty. The most effective leaders will walk in His footsteps, and learn His ways, and lead others in the same way that the Lord leads His people.

“A godly leader who values justice is a great strength and example to the people.” — Proverbs 29:4 (TPT).

What does this mean for me?

You may not want to be a senator or a governor. But we will all lead in some way. Do you have a job where you oversee others? Do you ever play as part of a team? Maybe you have a family member that looks up to you. Most of us lead someone in some way. And sometimes, the most challenging and important leadership role is knowing how to manage and lead ourselves!

Therefore, all of us can benefit from looking to the example of God as a king and leader. Take every opportunity you can to serve your government, to improve your processes and laws. Stand for righteousness and justice, fight pride and corruption, and be the most godly leader that you can be!

This is one way of bringing the love of God into society, transforming systems, and transforming lives. Thanks for reading!

Some people call these spheres the seven mountains. This idea, of seven mountains that influence society, was first developed by Bill Bright and Loren Cunningham in 1975. Since then, the idea has been taught by Lance Wallnau and also expanded in several books by Johnny Enlow. These seven mountain resources inspired the message of Dawn Of Purpose.
